Deep Blue Sea goes below the reach of sunlight, where the water is black and the only light is the light you bring or the light the animals make. About half the gallery is lit by the floodlights of a research submersible: a giant isopod crawling over abyssal mud, a goblin shark with its blade snout, yeti crabs on dark vent rock, a dumbo octopus, a Japanese spider crab, a coelacanth at the mouth of an undersea cave. Some of those are framed through the round viewport of the submersible itself. The other half switches every outside light off and lets the animals light themselves – anglerfish lures, the red and blue lamps of a dragonfish, firefly squid, a spinning atolla jellyfish, a pyrosome glowing end to end. Wide areas of dark water leave room for a title or a crop. Full UHD for desktop, streaming and print. Created by Jeff Dupler, using the latest in AI technology.
A note on accuracy: these are artistic interpretations of real deep sea animals, not photographs. Shapes, colors and details may not match the real species exactly, and the animal named in each image description is our best identification of that picture.
