Giza opens the Women Around the World series, and every frame in it is a place rather than a backdrop. A woman gathers the skirt of a rust linen dress on the worn stone steps of a mudbrick house, the doorway warm behind her. Another leans into the rigging of a felucca while the far bank of the Nile goes to a thin gold line. A third stands at the edge of a spice market with paprika and cumin heaped in the stalls, and a fourth rests her hands on a parapet above the causeway with the pyramids and the Sphinx low on the horizon. The women here live in the city rather than visit it, and one palette runs through the set: sand gold, warm ochre, terracotta, desert rose and olive green, nearly always lit by low sun.
