These are heaven’s soldiers on duty, not in a story about being soldiers. Divine armor in silver and gold, shoulder pauldrons and a proper breastplate, and wings that read as blades rather than decoration. I set most of them in the golden city itself – gold architecture, ethereal cityscape, godrays coming down between the towers – so the scale does the intimidating rather than the pose. One is on the ramparts of a celestial fortress with her weapon already up. One holds the gates with a spear planted and her wings half-raised. None of them are mid-scream or mid-lunge; they are calm, which is considerably more unnerving. Ready on command, and clearly used to it.
