The Greeks told of a nation of women who rode, hunted and fought and answered to no king. I wanted them outdoors and in motion. A rider leads her war horse through a river ford. An archer draws her bow on a ledge above a misty valley. A warrior swings a double-headed axe in a camp of hide tents, another charges through the dust before the walls of Troy, and a queen sharpens her spear by torchlight at a ruined shrine of Artemis. They wear gold breastplates and scale bodices with shoulders and arms bare, short leather war skirts and gold greaves. Women of every age and every race.
