The most looked-at woman in the world, and she knows exactly what it has cost her. This is my Helen of Troy collection, and I did not want another pin-up on a marble step – I wanted a life. So the gallery runs across five moments. Sparta first, in the painted megaron with the great round hearth, before any of it has happened. Then the black-hulled galley under way, pleats pressed flat against her on one side and streaming on the other, the coastline going. Then ten years on the walls above the Scaean Gate, the plain below her thick with tents and horses and the smoke of an army that is not leaving. Then the night the city burns, ash in the folds of her gown and soot on a bare shoulder. And then the headland afterward, salt-marked and travelled in, everything already spent. She wears the same thing throughout – fine pleated linen pinned at one shoulder, a braided gold girdle high beneath the bust, a serpent coiled on her upper arm, a thin laurel diadem. Women of every age and every race, because the story was never about one face. Created by Jeff Dupler, using the latest in AI technology.
