Mars Base follows the colonists who made the red planet home. White domes and linked habitats spread across ochre plains scattered with dark basalt, beneath a butterscotch sky and a small pale sun, and mesas rise on the horizon. Crews in bright suits drill for water, cut samples from layered rock and climb the walls of great canyons, while rover convoys cross the dunes and dust storms roll in toward the domes. Underground, whole towns are built into lava tubes, tier on tier of lit windows around a skylight open to the sky. Inside the habitat it is warm and ordinary – crews planning around a map table, relaxing together on long sofas, and greenhouse domes full of green growing under glass.
