Every angel in this gallery is having the biggest day of her life. I wanted to catch the transformation at the exact moment it happens – wings tearing free of the shoulders for the first time, a halo still resolving out of light rather than sitting finished overhead, a novice’s plain white robe and silver sash instead of ceremonial armor. Some are mid-ascent with their arms up and the storm splitting open into gold above them. Some are in a first battle they clearly did not expect, wings half-spread across a burning heavenly battlefield. Some are simply kneeling in the ruins of an old cathedral, catching their breath while the light gathers. It is the awkward, electric part of the story that most angel art skips straight past.
