Gliding through deep blue water, a humpback whale travels under shafts of sunlight

Introducing our Underwater Wildlife Album

A humpback whale over pale tropical sand, long knobbled pectoral fins spread, barnacles on the rostrum

Underwater Wildlife is the ocean half of the Natural World album: whales, sharks and squid, each species placed in the water it actually lives in. Humpbacks cross tropical sand, great whites move through cold kelp, and colossal squid wait in Antarctic deep water.

Nothing floats in an empty blue void. Each frame carries the fish, coral, krill or ice that belongs there, so the set reads as natural history rather than a cut-out. Dive in and see how deep it goes.

What is inside

Three galleries, 564 images in all.

  • Whales: twenty species from tropical humpbacks and open-ocean blue whales to bowheads, belugas and narwhals in the Arctic, 199 images.
  • Sharks: twenty species across kelp forest, coral reef, mangrove estuary and open ocean, 214 images.
  • Squid and Cephalopods: squid sorted by depth, from sunlit reef shallows through the glowing twilight zone to giant and colossal squid in the abyss, 151 images.

The three galleries run from the surface to the sea floor. Whales and sharks hold the sunlit and open water, where light comes down in shafts and schools of fish part around them; the squid gallery takes over below, where the only light is the kind the animals make themselves.

Species are drawn true to life: belugas and narwhals carry no dorsal fin because neither has one, whale sharks feed with the mouth held wide and toothless, and the strawberry squid keeps its two mismatched eyes.

How people use them

  • Wallpaper. Every image exports at full UHD, sharp on a desktop, a laptop or a large display.
  • Streaming and video calls. A natural scene behind you reads calmer and more interesting than a blank wall.
  • Lessons and presentations. Natural history visuals for classrooms, conservation talks and nature projects.
  • Print. The full-size files are large enough for framed prints and posters.

Every gallery is free to browse at preview size, members download the full-size UHD files, and complete galleries are also given away free. For the ground-level half of the Natural World album, see Land Wildlife, with big cats, elephants and wolves.
